<desc>The RTS award-winning documentary series following patients treated in the same 24-hour period at St George's Hospital in south west London, which has one of the most advanced and busiest A&amp;E departments in the world; a place where stories of life, love and loss unfold every day. Retired firefighter John, who's 52, is rushed to A&amp;E by helicopter after being accidently hit in the face by a golf club. The golf club hit him so hard that it snapped. John lost consciousness and is in an induced coma. With a suspected critical head injury, he's sent straight for a CT scan. John's wife Allison is by his side. 'John was in the fire brigade for 32 years. He would put his life on the line to save someone,' she says. 'And then he goes off to play golf and ends up...' As doctors assess the seriousness of John's head injuries, they are also concerned that his right eye isn't reacting as it should and he's weak down the right side of his body, which could indicate further problems. They decide to wake him from his coma. Joan, who's 77, has come to St George's after falling down the stairs at home and hurting her leg. As she waits to be treated, Joan talks about growing up in Camberwell: 'Sixteen children, my mum had. And she was the eldest of 22 children. My mum and dad just put it down to there was no television!' <desc>Few of us would think of building a home to look like a work of art. But on a hill overlooking a beautiful valley in south Devon, Joe and Claire and their young children are doing just that. Their new house will be a giant sculpture inspired by the local landscape, 70 metres long and featuring 34 enormous angled zinc shards jutting out in all directions. It will be astonishingly complicated and expensive to build. But Joe, who's young, wealthy, ambitious and fearless, intends to invest a large part of his self-made fortune into making the impossible possible, and build 'one of the greatest homes on the planet'. But right from the start, the problems are mind-boggling. Major structural engineering changes are necessary to contend with high winds hitting the shards, and the £835,000 budget virtually doubles before the first walls go up. A team of local builders struggle through all weathers to build a vast, intricate wooden frame, but the prefabricated timbers don't fit together. As delays mount, making Joe's dream a reality seems further away than ever. What should have been a masterpiece is in danger of becoming a white elephant. <desc>The RTS award-winning documentary series continues. It follows patients treated in the same 24-hour period at St George's Hospital in south-west London, which has one of the most advanced and busiest A&amp;E departments in the world; a place where stories of life, love and loss unfold every day. This episode focuses on patients for whom age is just a number. Eighty-one-year-old cyclist Bill is brought to St George's from Surrey after being hit by a car while crossing the road. Bill wasn't wearing a helmet, and he 'bullseyed' the car's windscreen. He has multiple injuries, but doctors are most worried that he may have sustained a serious head injury. Betty, Bill's wife of 50 years, is recovering from a stroke and worries about him cycling. Bill and Betty's eldest son Billy was knocked over and killed by a car, on the same road where Bill was hit. Meanwhile, 93-year-old Amy has come into A&amp;E after a clothes airer fell on top of her while she was hanging out the washing. She's with her 85-year-old friend Bernie. Amy talks about her two unhappy marriages and meeting Bernie when she was 75. And she recalls how her father refused to let her sign up to serve in the WRAF during the war. Instead she volunteered for ambulance service and worked through the Blitz, bringing patients to St George's. And 78-year-old Samuel has come to St George's after falling over some boxes and landing on his face. He is looked after by emergency nurse practitioner Craig. <title lang="en">24 Hours in A&amp;e</title>
<desc>The RTS award-winning documentary that follows patients treated in the same 24-hour period at St George's Hospital in south west London, which has one of the most advanced and busiest A&amp;E departments in the world; a place where stories of life, love and loss unfold every day. Train driver Andy, who's 48, is rushed to A&amp;E after falling 12 feet from a tree while cutting branches. Andy landed on his feet and has badly fractured both ankles. He doesn't have any sensation in his feet and doctors are concerned that the impact may have caused life-changing damage to critical nerves and blood vessels in his feet and legs. Medics decide to cut the skin on his calves to relieve dangerous swelling. Andy will need major surgery. Angela, who's 59, has come to St George's with her husband Antoni. She has a history of heart disease and her heart has been beating at over 150 bpm for eight hours, risking stroke and other complications. Cardiologist Dr Arun's attempts to bring down Angela's pulse using a powerful drug aren't successful, so he decides to electrically shock her heart to reset it. Meanwhile, three-year-old Shane has come to A&amp;E after falling off a trampoline at his grandma Marion's house. His sister Milly thinks Shane is faking it, but it turns out Shane has broken his leg and it will need to be put in a cast.
