    <title lang="en">Nomadland</title>
<desc>Writer and director Chloé Zhao's BAFTA, Golden Globe and Oscar-winning docu-drama stars Frances McDormand - earning her third best actress gong - as Fern, a middle-aged woman with no money who takes to the road in a van looking for work. There she meets a variety of people living in similar circumstances, a sort of moving society who are instant comrades, who help each other out and treat each other with compassion and respect. Several of Zhao's cast are genuine nomads, including Linda May, Charlene Swankie and Bob Wells, organiser of the Rubber Tramp Rendezvous - an event that gathers vehicle dwellers together to exchange views and life hacks for existing on the road. What starts out as seeming like a hardship begins to take on aspects of a desirable existence, with its freedoms across the awe-inspiring landscape and understatedly deep relationships. Fern even strikes up a close friendship with fellow nomad Dave (David Strathairn). But every person in the film has been forced into this existence through some sort of hardship, often created by the crash of 2008. It's not how they thought retirement would be. And they have to contend with many different aspects of road living, not finding work, the elements and mechanical failure to name just a few. They face it all without an ounce of self-pity though - as Fern says, they're not homeless; they're houseless.

<desc>Hugh Marlowe stars in Fred F Sears' invaders-from-space sci-fi thriller, which is notable for its dated-but-cute special effects from the legendary Ray Harryhausen. Newly-wed satellite scientist Dr Russell Marvin (Marlowe) and his bride Carol (Joan Taylor) witness the appearance of a UFO. But, only able to capture a sound recording, and no visual images, they are reluctant to report it to their employers. After their satellites are knocked out of orbit and their company suffers a deadly attack, the Marvins uncover the extraterrestrials' plans for conquest. But are they now too late to thwart the aliens' fleet of flying saucers?

    <title lang="en">Moonfall</title>
<desc>Writer and director Roland Emmerich loves a disaster. He did massive, landmark-destroying spaceships in Independence Day; a somewhat chilly New York in global-warming apocalypse The Day After Tomorrow; and blew up Woody Harrelson using a Mayan calendar and a supervolcano in 2012. This time it's the Moon that's going to cause the Earth's demise. It's veering off course, you see, and will hit us in about three weeks. But before then it will inevitably create havoc as Earth's gravity gets increasingly out of whack - tides will rise and people will bounce around like bingo balls in a tombola. What to do? Somewhat inevitably, NASA want to nuke it - presumably because that's what Bruce Willis did so heroically in Armageddon. Fortunately, there's three idiots willing to go into space to try to save the Earth. There's disgraced astronaut Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson) - who says aliens were actually responsible for the incident during which he was disgraced. Then there's NASA VIP Jocinda Fowl (Halle Berry), the partner whose life Brian saved during the incident that disgraced him, but who doesn't believe him about the aliens bit. And lastly unqualified conspiracy theorist KC Houseman (John Bradley), who believes that the Moon is not a hunk of rock but rather some sort of megastructure. Together they board a shuttle and head off to save the Earth, leaving loved ones behind to keep us abreast of the effects that the falling natural satellite is having on Earth. Have to say, got a really bad feeling about all this... Also features Donald Sutherland as a venerable old NASA official tucked away in a basement.

<desc>Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose stars in this sci-fi thriller that imagines what it would be like to watch a global apocalypse from space, while fighting to survive on the International Space Station. Scientist Kira is on her first mission to the ISS, accompanied by returning officer Christian who introduces her to the American and Russian crew. Kira gets to know everyone, experiences weightlessness and is told about the ISS's quirks, like the low hum of the life support. All pretty standard. But then the crew witness an explosion back on Earth. Is it a volcano? Nope. This catastrophe is worse than that; and manmade. Which begs the question: can the American and Russian colleagues continue to co-operate while their countries indulge in a bit of mutually assured destruction on the planet below? Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite.

<desc>Idris Elba takes on a particularly peeved lion in director Baltasar Kormákur's South African adventure monster movie. Dr Nate Samuels (Elba) has taken his daughters, Norah (Leah Jeffries) and Mer (Iyana Halley), to visit the place where their late mother grew up. Their host and guide is wildlife biologist and close family friend, Martin Battles (Sharlto Copley). There's needle between Mer and Nate because Mer feels that her dad deserted her mother when she was dying of cancer. That's not the full story, and this trip is a chance for him to reconnect. And everybody knows that nothing brings people together like being hunted by a ferocious, vengeful lion. But why is the lion so upset? Well, at the start of the film his entire pride is gunned down by poachers. So, fair enough. It's not long before the family find themselves trapped in his territory, where the law of the jungle is the only law that matters. Can our hero protect his own pride with nothing but a safari jeep, some heavy footwear and a keen right hook?
