<desc>Patrick Wilson, Kurt Russell, Lili Simmons and Matthew Fox star in writer-director S Craig Zahler's (Brawl in Cell Block 99) western horror. After murdering peaceful travellers, two outlaws flee into the hills. Stumbling across an occult burial ground, one of the men is killed by a ferocious tribesman, while the other, Pervis (David Arquette), escapes. He makes it to the town of Bright Hope, where he's shot by the suspicious sheriff Franklin Hunt (Russell) and thrown into jail. The doctor is drunk, so his assistant Samantha (Simmons) is called to tend Pervis, watched over by the deputy (Evan Jonigkeit). Next morning, the jailhouse is empty, a stable boy murdered and the only clue to who is responsible is a stone arrow stuck in the jail wall. A local Indian says it belongs not to Indians but to fearsome cannibalistic troglodytes. Hunt pulls together a posse, which includes Samantha's injured husband Arthur (Wilson) and dandified gunslinger Brooder (Fox). Riding into the wilderness to rescue the abductees, they soon discover why the Indian tribes give the troglodytes a wide berth.

Newly-wed satellite scientist Dr Russell Marvin (Marlowe) and his bride Carol (Joan Taylor) witness the appearance of a UFO. But, only able to capture a sound recording, and no visual images, they are reluctant to report it to their employers. After their satellites are knocked out of orbit and their company suffers a deadly attack, the Marvins uncover the extraterrestrials' plans for conquest. But are they now too late to thwart the aliens' fleet of flying saucers?

    <title lang="en">A Christmas Carol</title>
<desc>Fantasy drama. George C Scott stars in director Clive Donner's adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic festive tale. It's a snowy Victorian Christmas Eve and, while the rest of the town wishes each other a merry Christmas, miserly curmudgeon and tyrannical boss Ebenezer Scrooge (Scott) is in his cold office, turning down his nephew Fred's (Roger Rees) invitation to Christmas dinner and begrudgingly agreeing to give his employee Bob Cratchit (David Warner) a day's paid holiday. After a grumpy trip to the corn exchange, Scrooge returns home to a visit from the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley (Frank Finlay), who warns Scrooge that he faces a tormented afterlife unless he changes his ways. Scrooge is unconvinced... until Marley sends three spirits - the ghosts of Christmas Past (Angela Pleasence), Christmas Present (Edward Woodward) and Christmas Yet to Come (Michael Carter) - to persuade Scrooge that there's far more to life than turning a profit.

<desc>Festive family drama. Richard Attenborough stars in Les Mayfield's charming remake of the 1947 classic as Kris Kringle, who insists he really is Santa Claus. Kringle gets a job at Cole's department store on 34th Street thanks to toy department executive Dorey Walker (Elizabeth Perkins), who, like her daughter Susan (Mara Wilson), doesn't believe in Santa Claus. But Kringle is such a success that a rival store, which is losing money, decides to have him declared insane for his insistence on his identity. The case comes to trial, with Bryan Bedford (Dylan McDermott), Dorey's would-be suitor, acting for Kringle, out to prove that he really is Santa Claus, knowing that failure will break the hearts of children all over the world.

<desc>Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger star in Gil Junger's directorial debut, a smart romcom based on Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik) is desperate to accompany a boy to the school prom. However, her father has banned her from dating until her elder sister Katarina (Stiles) has a boyfriend. But Kat's fierce reputation and contempt for teen romance means that doesn't seem likely to be any time soon. Then Bianca hits on the idea of bribing brooding outsider Patrick Verona (Ledger) to ask Kat to the prom. All goes well, until Kat finds out why Patrick offered his invitation, by which time he has genuinely fallen for her... Also starring Allison Janney as a sex-obsessed school counsellor and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Bianca's would-be suitor.

<title lang="en">Beast Mode Season: Rise of the Planet of the Apes</title>
<title lang="en">Rise of the Planet of the Apes</title>
<desc>Director Rupert Wyatt's contribution to the iconic sci-fi saga is an origins story in which compassionate scientist Will Rodman (James Franco) tests a cure for Alzheimer's on apes, with unexpected consequences. Taking his research home with him after a catastrophic early experiment led to the cancellation of the project, Will brings up infant chimp Caesar in secret as part of his family - which includes Will's father (John Lithgow), whose dementia is Will's personal motivation for his work. Caesar grows into an adult ape of heightened intelligence, which prompts questions concerning the morality of humankind's treatment of our simian cousins, and leads to conflict. With Andy Serkis portraying Caesar via performance capture technology, the ape suits and prosthetics of the original films are a thing of the past, and this franchise reboot makes the most of today's digital realism, highlighting both the similarities and the differences between the two species.

<desc>Veteran motion-capture actor Andy Serkis directs Tom Hardy in the return of the gnarly symbiote antihero Venom, for another romp through the trials and tribulations of having a ravenous alien living inside your body. The Carnage of the title is both another symbiote and the inevitable result of the CGI showdown that they'll surely have with Venom at the film's climax. Carnage is created when Eddie Brock/Venom (Hardy) accidentally transfers his alien-infected blood to serial killer Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson) - oops. Using his new powers, Kasady/Carnage escapes execution and channels all his energy into tracking down Eddie/Venom for a dust up. Oh, and he also wants to get back with his ex, Frances/Shriek (Naomie Harris), whose scream can kill. Bless. Also starring Michelle Williams as Brock's girlfriend Anne. And the excellent Stephen Graham as a gobsmacked detective.

    <title lang="en">The Creator</title>
<desc>Director and co-writer Gareth Edwards' (Rogue One) sci-fi extravaganza stars John David Washington as an undercover operative tasked with destroying a superweapon in a war against AI. It's 2065 and 'The West' has been at war with AI ever since a nuclear bomb blew up LA. Despite this, Joshua (Washington) lives an apparently idyllic life with his pregnant wife Maya (Gemma Chan) in New Asia, where humans and simulants still live peacefully. Joshua and Maya like nothing more of an evening than a cuddle on the sofa to an easy listening groove - just like the old times. But then dystopia finds them, when troops emerge from the sea outside their home. Overhead, beams of light from the Behemothic battleship NSS Nimrod pierce the clouds, searching out its target. That's when Maya discovers to her horror that Joshua is on a mission to unmask Nirmata - the godlike creator of advanced AI. Maya thought Joshua was a simulant sympathiser just like her. How could he lie to her like this? But then she gets blown to smithereens. Five years on, a traumatised Joshua is forced back into service. His mission this time? To assassinate a superweapon so powerful it could even destroy the mighty Nimrod. Unfortunately the superweapon - Alphie (Madeleine Yuna Voyles) - looks just like a young girl. Can Joshua really execute the little cherub? And who the heck is Nirmata anyway?
