    <title lang="en">Passing</title>
<desc>Writer and debutant director Rebecca Hall's tense drama about two Black women 'passing' for something other than they are in Prohibition-era America, starring Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga. We meet Irene (Thompson) shopping among White people in Manhattan. She has her hat brim pulled way down low to cover her ethnicity. Whenever she interacts, she slowly raises her head, revealing her face, with a mix of nervousness and excitement. No one notices. She takes it up a notch, going to tea in a swish hotel. She is seated without incident. But then she notices someone staring right at her. Rumbled. Yes, but it turns out to be Clare (Negga), an old school friend. Irene doesn't recognise Clare at first because she is 'passing' as White. Much to Irene's horror, Clare is married to White racist John (Alexander Skarsgård), a despicable man who says he hates Black people. And yet John can't tell that he's married to a Black woman, even though - in his own words - 'she gets darker and darker' with each passing year. Irene wonders how Clare can do this. But is Irene in any position to judge? Based on Nella Larsen's 1929 novel. Co-produced by Film4.

<desc>Richard Basehart stars in Samuel Fuller's Korean War drama about men under the stress of battle. When a US division in Korea is forced to retreat, a platoon is left behind to fight a dangerous rearguard action. Corporal Denno (Basehart), a sensitive, intellectual man who is happier taking orders than taking responsibility, realizes he will have to assume command of the men if his superiors are killed - and is terrified at the prospect. But, after building a roadblock, setting up gun positions and laying a minefield, the men inevitably come under fire; and, during the exchange, Denno's fears start to come true. Thus it seems ever more likely that it will be down to Denno to get the remainder of the platoon out of the icy Korean mountains alive. The film also features the uncredited big-screen debut of one James Dean.

    <title lang="en">Mary, Queen of Scots</title>
<desc>Oscar-nominated Vanessa Redgrave and Glenda Jackson star in Charles Jarrott's historical drama about the tussle for power in Tudor Britain. When young Catholic Mary Stuart (Redgrave) arrives back in Scotland after the death of her husband, French monarch Francis II, she finds her nation torn between Catholicism and Protestantism, and her own right to rule undermined from without and within. Mary's Protestant half-brother James Stewart (Patrick McGoohan) intends to use her as a figurehead while he runs the country in her name. Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth I (Jackson) is sensitive to her cousin's claim to the English throne and dispatches two suitors, the Protestant Robert Dudley (Daniel Massey) and the Catholic Lord Darnley (Timothy Dalton), north of the border, hoping romantic intrigue will keep Mary from pursuing any regal ambitions outside of Scotland. And it works. But Mary's choice unwittingly places her on course to disaster. Co-starring Ian Holm, Nigel Davenport and Trevor Howard.

    <title lang="en">The King's Man</title>
<desc>Writer and director Matthew Vaughn takes us back to the origins of the Kingsman agency for the third film in the spy-caper franchise, starring Ralph Fiennes and Gemma Arterton. Orlando Oxford (Fiennes) is a war hero turned pacifist. Now, he and his wife Emily (Alexandra Maria Lara) support the victims of conflict. When Emily is killed on a mission in South Africa, Oxford vows to protect his son Conrad (Harris Dickinson) from violence. 'But surely the fun of these films is the violence,' I hear you protest. Well, as the First World War kicks off, Oxford and his incredibly skilled staff - Shola (Djimon Hounsou) and Polly (Gemma Arterton) - insert themselves in any historical situation they can; from the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand to the Russian Revolution. Along the way, they battle an international conspiracy involving - among others - the 'Mad Monk' Rasputin (Rhys Ifans), George V, Tsar Nicholas and Kaiser Wilhelm (all played by Tom Hollander). So do not fear, because to protect his son from violence, Oxford must use plenty of violence... but in the right way. And the dénouement - atop a rocky outcrop of the kind where Bond villains like to build their Grand Designs - is no exception. Also featuring Charles Dance as Lord Kitchener, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

<desc>If Michelle Yeoh features in a film you just know there's going to be some ass kicking and writer-directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert's multi-Oscar-winning, multiverse-skipping darkly-comic martial arts action flick is no exception. It's just a surprise to see Jamie Lee Curtis kicking ass too. Evelyn Wang (Yeoh) is unhappy with her life as a laundromat owner with tax issues. Her husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan) is dull. Her relationship with her daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu) is tense. She's about to be audited by officious IRS agent Deirdre Beaubeirdre (Jamie Lee Curtis). She needs to cook a tip-top New Year's meal for her visiting father Gong Gong (James Hong) - who always expects the best. And Joy wants to bring her girlfriend Becky (Tallie Medel) to the meal - which Evelyn can't see going down well. Evelyn's overwhelmed and tempted to question what the point of it all is. Then she's visited by a Waymond from another reality, who tells her that the very existence of the multiverse is under threat. Now Evelyn must journey across universes, absorbing the skills of all the other Evelyns she meets to defeat Jobu Tupaki - a malevolent force which mobilises the tax office security guards and Deidre and also looks very much like Evelyn's daughter Joy. So who's overwhelmed now?
