    <title lang="en">How Green Was My Valley</title>
<desc>Walter Pidgeon, Maureen O'Hara and Roddy McDowall star in John Ford's multi-Oscar-winning period drama set in the south Wales valleys of the 19th century. All the men of the Morgan family toil in dangerous conditions down in the mines. However, young Huw Morgan's (McDowall) parents, Gwilym (Donald Crisp) and Beth (Sara Allgood), are determined that their bright lad get a good education and become something more than a miner. The Morgans are a warm, loving family, but their solidarity is set to be challenged when Huw's sister Angharad (O'Hara) falls in love with the new preacher, Mr Gruffyd (Pidgeon), causing a scandal; a mining strike drives deep divisions within the family; and even Huw's independent ambitions cause friction. The movie beat Citizen Kane to the Academy Award for Best Picture and also picked up four other Oscars: John Ford won Best Director, Donald Crisp was awarded Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Arthur C Miller picked up Best Cinematography, and it also won a Best Art Direction award.

    <title lang="en">Broken Arrow</title>
<desc>Broken Arrow was one of the first westerns to depict Native Americans as real people rather than as tomahawk-wielding mass murderers. Tired of the repetitive reprisal killings between settlers and the indigenous locals in 1870s Arizona, gold prospector Tom Jeffords (James Stewart) visits Apache leader Cochise (Jeff Chandler) to discuss a truce. But, after he's welcomed into the fold by Cochise and even marries the chief's daughter, old racial problems resurface. Directed by Delmer Daves.

    <title lang="en">The Man From the Alamo</title>
<desc>Glenn Ford stars in Bud Boetticher's western, which is set in Texas in 1836. Frustrated by American settlers flouting the law in what is legally Mexican territory, Mexico's president Antonio López de Santa Anna sets out with his army, intent on expelling the foreigners he believes to be part of a US plot to annex Texas. As the Mexicans approach the fortified mission of the Alamo, its defenders select John Stroud (Ford) to leave them and instead organise the protection of a nearby community. While he's away, the Mexicans attack the Alamo and slaughter everyone inside it. Now, because no one is left to explain why he abandoned the Alamo's defence, Stroud finds himself branded a coward by his own side. But it's not long before he gets his chance to redeem himself and expose treachery within the American settlers' own ranks.

    <title lang="en">A Christmas Carol</title>
<desc>Fantasy drama. George C Scott stars in director Clive Donner's adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic festive tale. It's a snowy Victorian Christmas Eve and, while the rest of the town wishes each other a merry Christmas, miserly curmudgeon and tyrannical boss Ebenezer Scrooge (Scott) is in his cold office, turning down his nephew Fred's (Roger Rees) invitation to Christmas dinner and begrudgingly agreeing to give his employee Bob Cratchit (David Warner) a day's paid holiday. After a grumpy trip to the corn exchange, Scrooge returns home to a visit from the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley (Frank Finlay), who warns Scrooge that he faces a tormented afterlife unless he changes his ways. Scrooge is unconvinced... until Marley sends three spirits - the ghosts of Christmas Past (Angela Pleasence), Christmas Present (Edward Woodward) and Christmas Yet to Come (Michael Carter) - to persuade Scrooge that there's far more to life than turning a profit.

<desc>A stellar cast - including Toby Jones, Michael Gambon and Catherine Zeta-Jones - breathe new life into the comedy classic. The hapless Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard get involved with D-Day... but there's a spy among them. It's 1944 and the Nazis are looking for intel on Allied invasion plans. Meanwhile, Captain Mainwaring (Jones) and his crew are out on manoeuvres, stalking a runaway bull. Stand to attention doddering Godfrey (Gambon), posh, educated Sergeant Wilson (Bill Nighy), nice-but-dim Pike (Blake Harrison), dour Frazer (Bill Paterson), excitable Jones (Tom Courtenay) and spivvy Walker (Daniel Mays). Have they got their captain's back? Have they heck. Being gored in the rear is not really the war that Mainwaring was hoping for. Then he gets a call from a Colonel Theakes (Mark Gatiss) who wants them to patrol the Allied invasion base in Dover - a real mission. And then, while out on camouflage practice, they accidentally run glamorous journalist Rose (Zeta-Jones) off the road. She's there to write an article about them. Recognition at last. It's all happening. Rose proves a very popular distraction among the menfolk of Walmington. But the women - including Mainwaring's wife Elizabeth (Felicity Montagu) and Pike's mum Mavis (Sarah Lancashire) - are less keen. But who on earth is the spy? Also featuring a veritable roll call of top British charactor actor talent including Emily Atack as Walker's girlfriend, Alison Steadman as Mrs Fox and Annette Crosbie as Cissy.

Short:
(2016) Toby Jones and Catherine Zeta-Jones lead a stellar cast in a reboot of the comedy classic. The hapless Home Guard get involved with D-Day. But there's a spy among them.

<desc>Bruce Willis returns as Lt John McClane in Renny Harlin's all-action thriller, this time walking into trouble at Washington's Dulles Airport, where he's supposed to be meeting his wife Holly (Bonnie Bedelia). Unfortunately, at the same time, a military jet is bringing in a South American drug baron to face justice, and a group of terrorists led by ex-CIA renegade Colonel Stewart (William Sadler) have been hired to free him, even if they have to crash fuel-filled planes, including the one Holly is aboard, to do it. With his cop instincts, McClane sees the plot unfold from the beginning, and is on the case straight away, but it would help if airport security, led by Carmine Lorenzo (Dennis Franz), also got up to speed.

<desc>Philip Seymour Hoffman stars in Anton Corbijn's adaptation of John le Carré's thriller. The furtive arrival in Hamburg of Issa Karpov (Grigoriy Dobrygin) sparks intense interest within the intelligence community. He's a half-Chechen, half-Russian Muslim who has illegally fled to Germany after being tortured by Russian security operatives. Once he's in Hamburg, Karpov tries to claim the vast fortune that once belonged to his deceased Russian mafia father. But is he simply a political refugee seeking his inheritance, or is his agenda far more sinister? Melancholic German agent Günther Bachmann (Hoffman) and his team (Daniel Brühl and Nina Hoss) want to play the waiting game, see exactly what he's up to and perhaps foil a bigger plot, but their seniors would rather he were snatched from the streets immediately... With Rachel McAdams as a human rights activist; Willem Dafoe as the banker who can give Karpov access to his fortune; Robin Wright as a CIA agent; and Homayoun Ershadi as a philanthropic Muslim leader with suspected links to al-Qaeda.
