Uncomfortable, intense and brutal psychological horror from writer-director Brandon Cronenberg, starring Alexander Skarsgård and Mia Goth. James (Skarsgård) is a writer who has so far failed to follow up his acclaimed first novel. He and his wife Em (Cleopatra Coleman) head for a luxury beachside holiday at a gated resort in tropical (and fictional) Li Tolqa, where they befriend an apparently welcoming community of wealthy regular vacationers headed by Gabi (Goth) and her husband Alban (Jalil Lespert). But any plans to break the writer's block in a relaxed atmosphere of sunshine and expat bonhomie are shattered when the new friends stray outside the resort grounds and get into a road accident that kills a local. As the driver responsible, James is immediately sentenced to death according to the laws of this peculiar foreign society. But those laws also allow an alternative option: wealthy convicted criminals can pay to be cloned and have their duplicates killed in their place. Untroubled by the moral quandary, James takes the cloning option. He can afford it, after all. Except... the cost is far more than financial, and his decision sends him down an inexorable spiral of cruelty and humiliation at the sadistic hands of the manipulative Gabi and her libertine coterie.
