    <title lang="en">Berberian Sound Studio</title>
<desc>Toby Jones stars in director Peter Strickland's psychological horror, which offers a disturbing cinematic experience despite its near-absolute lack of standard horror visuals. The narrative centres on the reserved, well-mannered Gilderoy (Jones), a gifted sound engineer from Surrey, whose expertise at recording and creating innovative sound effects sees him hired by an Italian film studio. But this is the 1970s and his new employers specialise in the ultra-low budget, ultra-violent and exploitative films of the country's burgeoning giallo horror movement. Thus, in a cramped audio studio in Rome, the Englishman comes to spend all day recording screaming women and inflicting grievous damage upon vegetables to provide the soundtrack to torture scenes; and the rest of his time feeling lonely and homesick. And it's not long before the lurid onscreen violence, in addition to the exotic mores and moods of his co-workers, begins to take its toll on his mental health... A Film4 production.

    <title lang="en">Cleopatra</title>
<desc>Famous for being the only film to make a loss despite being the highest-grossing movie in its year of release, and also bringing Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton together in what was to become one of the world's most famous on-off-on relationships, Joseph L Mankiewicz's film almost defines the word 'epic'. Taylor plays Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, who uses both her political wiles and her body to first woo Julius Caesar (Rex Harrison), then Mark Antony (Burton) to protect and even expand her realm. As history tells us, she was to meet untimely end. But it is in the sumptuous telling that the film is so successful, with sets more extravagant than seen before (Cleopatra's triumphal entry into Rome is a pre-CGI masterpiece). Burton, Harrison and Taylor, none of whom were first choices (imagine Stephen Boyd, Peter Finch and Joan Collins) all produced some of the best work of their careers and, despite its epic length, it never flags.

    <title lang="en">The Battle at Apache Pass</title>
<desc>Action-packed western set in the epic landscape of Utah. Chiricahua Apache chief Cochise (Jeff Chandler) is doing his best to keep peace with Major Jim Colton's (John Lund) cavalry outfit at Fort Buchanan. But things go awry for Cochise thanks to the underhand dealings of a stubborn Indian Affairs advisor and the murderous actions of the renegade rival Mogollon Apache leader Geronimo (Jay Silverheels). The tension steadily ratchets between the adversaries, leading inexorably to the fierce clash that gives the film its name. Directed by George Sherman.

    <title lang="en">Fury</title>
<desc>Writer and director Dave Ayer's action-packed war movie stars Brad Pitt as a tank commander taking his crew into the dark, bloody heart of Hitler's final stand in Germany. Don 'Wardaddy' Collier (Pitt) has killed Germans in North Africa and now he's killing them in Germany. But the Germans have killed one of his crew, and his replacement, Norman Ellison (Logan Lerman), hasn't killed so many Germans, instead spending his short involvement in the war mostly typing. But now he's gonna have to get in on the killing because, as Don tells him, ideals are peaceful, history violent. As Ellison plucks up the courage to fire his gun, he's accompanied by Boyd 'Bible' Swan (Shia LaBeouf), who - as his name suggests - keeps the crew abreast of what the Lord might be thinking. Then there's lead driver Trini 'Gordo' Garcia (Michael Peña) and thuggish Grady 'Coon-Ass' Travis (Jon Bernthal). Oh, and let's not forget the tank: the titular Fury. Can they all make it safely to where they're going, tearing their way through a veil of Germans running at them from woods and appearing from holes in the ground? Or will newbie Ellison be a weak link that ends them all?

    <title lang="en">The Invitation</title>
<desc>Director Jessica M Thompson's gothic horror stars Nathalie Emmanuel as a struggling New York artist who discovers that she has rich British relatives but then finds out that their plans for her totally suck. Evie (Emmanuel) wants to be a ceramicist, but for now she works as a waiter to pay the bills. After an event, she blags a swag bag with a free DNA test in it and takes it just for fun. Next thing she knows she's in a restaurant with posh bloke Oliver (Hugh Skinner) being invited to a wedding in... wait for it... Whitby. When she arrives in Blighty, it's to an odd-looking mansion overseen by bolshie butler... wait for it... Renfield (Sean Pertwee). She's then introduced to Walter... wait for it... De Ville (Thomas Doherty), who's impossibly charming and apparently the only guest she's not related to. No prizes for guessing what's going on here, but let's just say that Evie could be in Yorkshire for a very long time. Perhaps - mwahahaha - an eternity.
