    <title lang="en">Death to Smoochy</title>
<desc>Danny DeVito's dark comedy stars Robin Williams as Rainbow Randolph, a corrupt TV clown who's sacked when he's caught taking bribes, and replaced by clean-cut Smoochy (Edward Norton). But Randolph will go to extraordinary lengths for revenge... The twisted humour and cynical portrayal of children's entertainment - scripted by Late Night with David Letterman writer Adam Resnick - are the ingredients of a cult classic, combining to produce a unique oddball film, with a compelling cast that also includes Catherine Keener, Jon Stewart, Pam Ferris, Harvey Fierstein and DeVito himself.

    <title lang="en">Mr Popper's Penguins</title>
    <title lang="xx">Mr. Popper's Penguins</title>
<desc>Jim Carrey stars in director Mark Waters' family comedy, loosely based on a classic children's book. Tom Popper (Carrey) is a New York property shark with a failed marriage and a strained relationship with his kids. Popper's own father was an explorer. His absence while Tom was growing up may explain Tom's emotional disengagement, but a more tangible legacy is the arrival of a crate of six gentoo penguins - a bequest from the old man's deathbed. Manhattan isn't the obvious place in which to care for the birds, but Popper quickly bonds with his charges, and his adventures with them act as a springboard for a possible reconciliation with his family - as well as ample opportunity for Carrey to ply his trademarked rubber-faced, flex-limbed comedic turn. The only dark cloud on Popper's horizon is the zoo's Nat Jones (Clark Gregg), who believes the creatures would be better off with him than in Popper's apartment. Also starring Ophelia Lovibond as Popper's assistant Pippi.

<desc>John Cleese stars in Jerry Zucker's comedy about a Las Vegas casino owner who sets up a special event for his highest rollers. Lucky tokens in Donald P Sinclair's (Cleese) slot machines entitle six punters to enter a race across America with $2million as the prize. He'll make a killing on the bets placed on the players while the contestants (including Rowan Atkinson, Breckin Meyer, Amy Smart, Whoopi Goldberg and Cuba Gooding Jr) dash for the cash. Any comparisons to It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World are completely deserved but Zucker (Airplane!, The Naked Gun) keeps the action flowing while making sure the film, unlike ... Mad..., doesn't outstay its welcome. Look out for Kathy Bates as a psychopathic roadside squirrel-seller.

    <title lang="xx">The Old Man &amp; the Gun</title>
<desc>David Lowery's crime biopic stars Robert Redford as Forrest Tucker, a real-life bank robber who found himself wanted by police across the United States for a string of prison escapes and robberies. We first meet Tucker in the early 80s. He's 74 and has been evading police for two years since his last audacious prison break. But he's not taking things easy and laying low. That's not his bag. This suave old geezer has a somehow enamouring way of walking into a bank, charmingly informing the teller that he has a gun that he doesn't want to use, and walking out with a big old sack of cash. In fact, he's just done exactly that when he meets Jewel (Sissy Spacek), an enchanting farmer who he quickly trusts so much that he decides to reveal his true identity to her. Tucker, alongside spending time on Jewel's farm enjoying her more simplistic way of life, embarks on a string of heists. But local detective John Hunt (Casey Affleck) is on his case, and Tucker is soon torn between the peaceful life he's enjoyed with Jewel and his old criminal ways. Also starring Danny Glover and Tom Waits.

    <title lang="en">I, Robot</title>
<desc>Set in 2035, Alex Proyas's all-action science-fiction film is inspired by Isaac Asimov's 1950s short stories. The science of robotics is so advanced that humanoid-looking servants have been developed, ready to obey any command from a human. When the chief designer of US Robotics, the biggest manufacturer of this new brand, is found dead in the company's atrium after falling from the upper floor, it has all the hallmarks of suicide, and Chicago cop Del Spooner (Will Smith) is assigned to the case. But technophobe Spooner doesn't believe that all robots are harmless. Despite opposition from his superiors and from the company, he investigates further and soon his suspicions centre on one robot, Sonny (voiced by Alan Tudyk). And it's not long before Spooner unearths a terrifying conspiracy.

    <title lang="en">Predator</title>
<desc>John McTiernan's sci-fi action-thriller stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Major Dutch Schaefer, the leader of an elite commando unit sent into the jungles of Central America to rescue government officials who've been kidnapped by guerrilla fighters. But, as the group make their way into the jungle, they discover the mutilated bodies of a previous American special forces unit, and soon realise that the mission isn't what they'd been led to believe it was. As they attempt to retreat from the jungle, somebody, or something, pursues them and starts to wipe the commandos out, one by one, and Dutch recognises that he's up against an otherworldly warrior who's equipped with superior weapons and strength - and also with invisibility. In the end, the battle comes down to mano a mano, as the two face off and the invisible predator (played by Kevin Peter Hall) finally reveals his true self.

<desc>Snappy, alligator-filled horror starring Kaya Scodelario. Haley (Scodelario) is a budding swimmer with dreams of competing professionally. When she gets a call from her sister saying that a brutal hurricane is about to hit nearby, she becomes concerned that her estranged dad, Dave (Barry Pepper), might be in danger. She turns up at the old family house just as the bad weather is really kicking in and decides to hide it out in the crawl space beneath. There, she finds Dave unconscious with a gnarly-looking bite mark on his shoulder. Naturally, Haley's first thought is to get him to a hospital. That's when the alligators arrive. As she attempts to move her dad, water begins to flood into the house, and she finds her exit blocked by two of the terrifyingly toothy beasts. She sees three people looting outside and tries to call on them for help. But no sooner has she hailed them than they get brutally devoured by three more of the ruinous reptiles. They're everywhere! Just how in the hell is she going to get out of this one? Those swimming skills may come in handy...

<desc>Dystopian drama. Tom Hiddleston stars in Ben Wheatley's adaptation of JG Ballard's 1975 novel. Dr Robert Laing (Hiddleston) has recently moved into a massive new tower block at London's edge. The professional classes have flocked to buy apartments in the highly desirable modern development. Initially they enjoy an idyllic lifestyle, but problems with the building's infrastructure cause a stratification of its occupants along lines of class and income. As problems with the power supply and rubbish disposal worsen, the residents respond with wild bacchanalian parties and frenzied sexual promiscuity. But when the police show no interest in investigating a suicide that takes place, all pretence of civility is abandoned and the inhabitants turn on each other with increasingly cruel savagery. With Sienna Miller as Laing's lover Charlotte; Luke Evans as TV documentary-maker Wilder and Elisabeth Moss as his pregnant wife Helen; and Jeremy Irons as the building's architect Anthony Royal and Keeley Hawes as his aloof wife Ann. Co-funded by Film4.
