    <title lang="en">Call Jane</title>
<desc>Director Phyllis Nagy's timely activism drama stars Elizabeth Banks and Sigourney Weaver. It tells the true story of the Jane Collective - an underground abortion network which helped women in pre-Roe-v-Wade America - through the prism of a fictional woman whose pregnancy threatens her life. It's August 1968, and Joy (Banks) is about as unlikely a candidate for illegal abortion as you can get. She has a rich lawyer husband (Chris Messina). She has a large suburban house. She even has a well-behaved teenage daughter. She is living the American dream. The closest Joy ever gets to civil unrest is observing a yippie protest from behind a police cordon outside the hotel where she's attending an event. But Joy is pregnant. And she's also about to be diagnosed with congestive heart failure. The only way to reverse it is by 'therapeutic termination'. To get access to this euphemism, Joy must go before a hospital board - which is literally manned. When the board refuse the termination, all sorts go through Joy's head. Then she sees a flyer in town saying 'Pregnant? Need help? Call Jane.' Soon Joy learns that Jane isn't an individual, it's a group dedicated to helping women safely get the abortion they need. Enter Virginia (Weaver), the formidably committed head of The Janes, and a strong cast of supporting actors - including Kate Mara, Wunmi Mosaku, Grace Edwards and Aida Turturro - playing women who have both needed help and want to help. Will Joy also make the journey from patient to activist? Featuring Cory Michael Smith as the doctor who charges for the abortions.

<desc>American drama directed by Robert Rossen, based on the novel by Robert Penn Warren. Through the eyes of journalist Jack Burden (John Ireland), the film focuses on the rise and fall of the power-hungry politician Willie Stark (Broderick Crawford). Stark - who holds a rural county seat - teaches himself law to fight against political corruption, which increases his support among the locals. As he gains popularity, Stark continues to seek a higher position. During his rise to the top, Stark behaves more and more like the corrupt politicians he once fought against, discovering that his vanity and lust for power have taken over. Behind closed doors, he must suffer the consequences of his extramarital affairs. He also deals with the complex relationship he has with his son Tom (John Derek), who turns to alcohol as a result of his father's actions. He achieves what he set out to - but be careful how you treat people on the way up...

    <title lang="en">Fisherman's Friends</title>
<desc>Director Chris Foggins' heart-warming comedy is based on the real-life story of the eponymous Cornish folk ensemble who took the UK charts by storm in 2010, starring Daniel Mays, Tuppence Middleton and James Purefoy. Danny and his London music biz mates are on a stag do in Port Isaac, Cornwall. And boy do they think they're the business and that the locals are a shoal of fools. For a laugh A&amp;R man Danny's (Mays) mates set him up to sign The Fisherman's Friends, 10 self-confessed 'hairy-arsed fishermen' led by Jim (Purefoy), who sing traditional shanties in the local pub. They then leave him there. Nice. Danny's shades and leather jacket might cut the tartar up Soho, but in Cornwall he's a fish out of water. But before long, he starts to see some merit in this middle-aged boy band. They sing from the soul and speak to the heart, he tells them. And it definitely helps that Danny fancies Jim's daughter, Alwyn (Middleton). But can he convince the London execs this is a goer?

    <title lang="en">The Equalizer Triple Bill: The Equalizer</title>
<desc>Denzel Washington reunites with Training Day director Antoine Fuqua in this crime thriller, which is a reimagining of the 80s TV series that starred Edward Woodward. Ex-Commando Robert McCall (Washington) comes out of retirement to kick some Russian butt on behalf of his friend, Alina (Chloë Grace Moretz, of Kick-Ass fame), a teenage sex worker who's been assaulted by her pimp. McCall made a promise to his dead wife to give up his life of state-sanctioned violence. It's a promise that he's kept for many years by maintaining an obsessively regimented schedule of ordinary-day living, including breakfast at a diner, a day's work at a DIY store, then back to the same diner for tea. It's at the diner where he meets Alina, who likes talking to the mysterious, brooding man reading his books. And it's this friendship that drags him back into his old life when Alina is badly beaten by her pimp. McCall must weigh up keeping his promise to his dead wife and righting a wrong to a girl who he met in a café. Of course, his strong moral sense of how the world should be and how violence needs to be met with violence means he can't help but avenge Alina. But her pimp and his crew, who McCall deals with in 19.24 seconds after predicting 20 seconds - he's still got it - is only the tip of the iceberg. Can McCall really come straight out of retirement and take on an entire Russian crime syndicate, headed by Teddy (Marton Csokas), who is far less cuddly than his name suggests? And would anyone other than Denzel Washington take all this on? Well, Edward Woodward would.
