    <title lang="en">Monos</title>
<desc>Writer/director Alejandro Landes's disconcerting and hallucinatory thriller is a journey into the teenage heart of darkness, set among a group of feral teenage guerrilla soldiers, named Monos, who live on a mountaintop somewhere above the clouds of Latin America. Their only accommodation is monolithic ruins that tower over them, as a reminder of the brutal adult world playing out beneath them. At the start of the film, they are visited by 'Messenger' (Wilson Salazar), who delivers to them a milking cow named Shakira and an American hostage who he calls Doctora (Julianne Nicholson). The kids are told that under no circumstances must Shakira or Doctora be harmed. Oh dear. Apart from these occasional and unscheduled visits from Messenger, whose other function is to drill and bully them, they are left completely to their own devices. As Lord of the Flies teaches us, little good can come from a society entirely constructed by and consisting of children... and this lot have guns and machetes! Starring Sofia Buenaventura, Julián Giraldo and Karen Quintero. In English and Spanish, with English subtitles.

<desc>Director Philip Karlson's western is a mature examination of racism, violence and parental ambition, all deftly dealt with within the constraints of the movie's certification. Van Heflin stars as Lee Hackett, a veteran of the Wild West who has failed to adapt to the changing life of the frontier. And his determination to mould his sons Ed and Davy (Tab Hunter and James Darren) in his gun-totin' image backfires when one of them turns into a murderous desperado.

<desc>Billy Wilder's Oscar-nominated film stars Jean Arthur and Marlene Dietrich as chalk-and-cheese women in post-war Berlin with John Lund as the man caught between them. Arthur plays Phoebe West, an upright Congresswoman sent to report on the morale (and morality) of the troops. Placed under the care of Captain John Pringle (Lund), she is amazed at the black market racketeering, the liaisons with the German women and in particular, the actions of nightclub singer Erika Von Schluetow (Dietrich). What she doesn't know is that Erika is Pringle's mistress. As West draws closer to the truth, Pringle must distract her and what better way than by declaring his undying love for her and hoping he can juggle the two women's affections successfully.

<desc>Based on the Donald Hamilton novel Smokey Valley, Rudolph Maté's Cold War western stars Glenn Ford as a smallholder who stands alone against the brutal tactics of a tyrannical rancher's (Edward G Robinson) plans for expansion. Made in the aftermath of Senator McCarthy's Hollywood witch-hunts, the film is a thinly-veiled allegory of America's stance against communism. Also starring Barbara Stanwyck.

    <title lang="en">Save Yourselves!</title>
    <desc>(2020) 93mins R (15?)
So you spend too much time staring at a screen. Even your weekly film evenings with your partner pass with only cursory looks at the larger screen just beyond the clutch of your palm. But what to do? It's just modern life, right? Get overrit. Or... go cold turkey by going off grid for a week. No social. No screens. Nothing. Just you, your other half and the wonderous isolation of nature. And that's just what happens in this gentle apocalypse comedy starring Sunita Mani and John Reynolds, written and directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson. Problem is, while Su (Mani) and Jack (Reynolds) are off-gridding in a cabin in the woods - and learning just how ill-equipped they are for it skills-wise by the way - there's an alien invasion. But don't be thinking towering indomitable machines as per War of the Worlds or shadow-casting spaceships a la Independence Day. These aliens are cute little fluffy balls that our hapless couple mistake for a pouffe on their first encounter with one. But as cute as they are, they just keep coming and coming. To what purpose is unclear and Su and Jack aren't about to hang around to find out. But how can two NY hipsters survive in a post-apocalyptic world when they can't even chop wood? Whether or not the cute fluffy balls conceal ferocious, sharp-toothed aliens like monstrous hedgehogs seems beside the point... all the aliens have to do is wait it out. Moral of the story: leave your phones on folks!

<desc>John Carpenter's fun martial arts romp keeps its tongue firmly in its cheek. Kurt Russell plays Jack Burton, who agrees to pick up a friend's girlfriend, Miao Yin (Suzee Pai), from the airport. But she's kidnapped in front of him, and he finds out that she's been abducted by sorcerer Lo Pan (James Wong), the host of the spirit of an ancient Chinese warlord. He wants her unique green eyes to rejuvenate his spirit, and Burton has just hours to track down his lair and free Yin. With a nod to the Indiana Jones franchise, Carpenter enjoys setting up one exciting, exotic set piece after another, while Russell's performance recalls the all-action, wise-cracking Snake Plissken from Escape from New York.

Director John Carpenter's 1986 action-fantasy inspired by classic Chinese martial arts films, screening on Film4 for the first time in over fifteen years.

<desc>Patrick Wilson, Kurt Russell, Lili Simmons and Matthew Fox star in writer-director S Craig Zahler's (Brawl in Cell Block 99) western horror. After murdering peaceful travellers, two outlaws flee into the hills. Stumbling across an occult burial ground, one of the men is killed by a ferocious tribesman, while the other, Pervis (David Arquette), escapes. He makes it to the town of Bright Hope, where he's shot by the suspicious sheriff Franklin Hunt (Russell) and thrown into jail. The doctor is drunk, so his assistant Samantha (Simmons) is called to tend Pervis, watched over by the deputy (Evan Jonigkeit). Next morning, the jailhouse is empty, a stable boy murdered and the only clue to who is responsible is a stone arrow stuck in the jail wall. A local Indian says it belongs not to Indians but to fearsome cannibalistic troglodytes. Hunt pulls together a posse, which includes Samantha's injured husband Arthur (Wilson) and dandified gunslinger Brooder (Fox). Riding into the wilderness to rescue the abductees, they soon discover why the Indian tribes give the troglodytes a wide berth.
