    <title lang="en">Shadow of a Doubt</title>
<desc>Alfred Hitchcock's understated classic thriller, which was the director's personal favourite, stars Joseph Cotten as Charlie Oakley, a killer attempting to evade the law. Oakley murders rich eastern widows for their money and belongings, but things start to get a bit too hot for him, so he heads west to California, where his beloved niece Charlie (Teresa Wright) lives. Pursuing him is Detective Jack Graham (Macdonald Carey), who thinks either Oakley or one other suspect have been committing the murders. At first, the niece absolutely refuses to countenance the notion that her uncle is the 'Merry Widow Murderer'. But little clues start to chip away at her faith in the man, until, after various plot twists and turns, it's not clear who is in the greater danger...

<desc>Jesse Hibbs takes directorial duties for this fifth retelling of fortune-seeking and treachery on the Alaskan frontier. First made in 1914, and with previous versions featuring Marlene Dietrich, Randolph Scott and John Wayne, this remake of the western was the first to be shot in colour and stars Anne Baxter, Jeff Chandler and Rory Calhoun. Roy Glennister (Chandler) owns the area's largest gold mine, Cherry Malotte (Baxter) makes a killing from charging extortionate prices at her saloon, while Alexander McNamara (Calhoun) has plans to swindle both out of their lucrative enterprises. But Glennister catches wind of what's up and events are set in train that lead inexorably to the tale's (by now traditional) climactic fist fight.

<desc>Andrew V McLaglen's poignant drama stars James Stewart as Charlie Anderson, a widower and wealthy Virginia farming patriarch trying to keep his family together and safe through the Civil War. The moving story of how Charlie deals with overwhelming tragedy - from the capture of his young son by the Confederate Army to his daughter's love for a Confederate soldier and the untimely deaths of his oldest son and daughter-in-law - was a great hit, demonstrated by the fact that the famous soliloquy Stewart delivered at Anderson's wife's graveside was released as a record. Also starring Doug McClure, Glenn Corbett, Patrick Wayne and Rosemary Forsyth.

    <title lang="en">Our Friend</title>
<desc>Dakota Johnson, Jason Segel and Casey Affleck star in director Gabriela Cowperthwaite's devastatingly poignant drama about a family coping with a terminal cancer diagnosis. The film opens with Nicole (Johnson) and Matt (Affleck) discussing how to tell their two young children that their mum is going to die. As they back and forth on who should say what or not, their daughters - Molly (Isabella Kai) and Evie (Violet McGraw) - are sat outside with close family friend Dane (Segel). We're not in the room as the news is broken. We're outside with Dane and only hear the hearts breaking. At this time, Dane feels his life isn't where it should be. He's not married. He has no family. He works in a shop as he starts to think about doing stand-up comedy. Regardless, Dane does an extraordinary thing. He recognises that the family are overwhelmed and offers to move in to help with chores, and the girls, and whatever else is needed. And much else will be needed because Nicole is only going to get worse... Based on writer and executive producer Matthew Teague's essay about his wife's death, The Friend: Love Is Not a Big Enough Word.

    <title lang="en">Fury</title>
<desc>Writer and director Dave Ayer's action-packed war movie stars Brad Pitt as a tank commander taking his crew into the dark, bloody heart of Hitler's final stand in Germany. Don 'Wardaddy' Collier (Pitt) has killed Germans in North Africa and now he's killing them in Germany. But the Germans have killed one of his crew, and his replacement, Norman Ellison (Logan Lerman), hasn't killed so many Germans, instead spending his short involvement in the war mostly typing. But now he's gonna have to get in on the killing because, as Don tells him, ideals are peaceful, history violent. As Ellison plucks up the courage to fire his gun, he's accompanied by Boyd 'Bible' Swan (Shia LaBeouf), who - as his name suggests - keeps the crew abreast of what the Lord might be thinking. Then there's lead driver Trini 'Gordo' Garcia (Michael Peña) and thuggish Grady 'Coon-Ass' Travis (Jon Bernthal). Oh, and let's not forget the tank: the titular Fury. Can they all make it safely to where they're going, tearing their way through a veil of Germans running at them from woods and appearing from holes in the ground? Or will newbie Ellison be a weak link that ends them all?
