    <title lang="en">Ben Wheatley Triple: In the Earth</title>
<desc>Writer and director Ben Wheatley's deep-in-the-woods horror was written during the first Covid lockdown and filmed as the pandemic lumbered on. The film itself is set during a pandemic and follows Dr Martin Lowery (Joel Fry) and park ranger Alma (Ellora Torchia) as they venture into England's forests to search for Lowery's missing colleague Dr Olivia Wendle (Hayley Squires), who has a theory that all plant-life is connected in a vast underground network through which it can communicate - sentient mycelium. But all does not go according to plan on the expedition when Alma and Martin are attacked in the dead of night. They awake to find their radio destroyed, and their shoes missing. Then Martin gets a bad cut on his foot and Alma notices that they're being watched. But by who? Well it's Reece Shearsmith playing a man called Zach. Zach's just living in the woods. He seems quite helpful. He offers shoes and even sews up Martin's foot, after a fashion. But then he gives them a drink of his own concoction and gets out an acoustic guitar. You just know it's all downhill from there...

<desc>Second World War drama about a warship assigned to mail runs but that ends up engaged in battle anyway, starring Edward G Robinson, Glenn Ford and Marguerite Chapman and directed by William A Seiter. USS John Paul Jones II is built in a rush to replace the first one, which was famed for its service history and was sunk while it was saving a carrier. But JPJ II doesn't quite live up to its famous namesake, fails sea trials and is given the mail run. Oh the ignominy! But it's not over for this plucky little ship. When a Japanese taskforce engages American ships, the Jones finds itself in among the fighting, in spite of orders. Can the crew and the ship prove themselves in real battle conditions?

<desc>John Wayne and Rock Hudson star in Andrew V McLaglen's western as Union Colonel John Thomas and Confederate Colonel James Langdon, who clash in the dog days of the Civil War and, after the truce is agreed, take different paths. Langdon leads his men south to Mexico, where they'll join Maximillian's army, while Thomas and his men decide to trap and train wild horses. Inevitably, their paths cross again and, somewhat reluctantly, they join forces to stop Maximillian's plans for conquest. The film suffered from being released in the same year as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Wild Bunch and Wayne in Oscar-winning form in True Grit, but it stands alongside them, with a panoramic sweep of a story and two leads who successfully spark off each other.

<desc>Lana Turner and Oscar-nominated Juanita Moore star in director Douglas Sirk's classic melodrama, which explores race relations and mother-daughter relationships. When her young daughter Susie goes missing at the beach, white widow and aspiring actress Lora Meredith (Turner) meets black single mother Annie Johnson (Moore), who found and cared for the lost Susie. In response, Lora invites Annie and her young daughter Sarah Jane to stay with her. In time, Annie becomes Lora's housekeeper, nanny and best friend, and her support enables Lora to fulfil her acting ambition. But the film's main turns and tensions come from the daughters. Even from a young age, Sarah Jane seeks to exploit the light skin tone she inherited from her father and disassociates herself from her dark-skinned mother; and this only becomes more pronounced as she turns into a young woman (played by Susan Kohner). Meanwhile, the teenage Susie (Sandra Dee) unexpectedly becomes a love rival to her own mother. With John Gavin, Robert Alda and Dan O'Herlihy.

    <title lang="en">Le Mans '66</title>
    <title lang="xx">Ford v Ferrari</title>
<desc>Oscar-winning sports drama directed by James Mangold, based on the true story of the 1966 edition of the famously gruelling 24 Hours of Le Mans motor race, starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale. In the 1960s, Ferrari are dominating the iconic test of construction and resilience. But the Italian manufacturer is failing financially, and needs a buyout to stay afloat. Enter Lee Iacocca (Jon Bernthal) and Henry Ford II (Tracy Letts), who run Ford. They put together a generous offer to buy Ferrari, but the company's owner Enzo Ferrari instead uses their interest to secure a more lucrative deal elsewhere, deliberately sticking a metaphoric two fingers up at Ford in the process. Henry doesn't take it well. In fact, he's so furious that he decides to embarrass Ferrari by wrestling their Le Mans crown from them. So he orders his company to build a car capable of winning the famous race and signs up Carroll Shelby (Damon), an ex-racing driver and car designer who was the last non-Ferrari driver to win Le Mans, back in 1959. Shelby and his close friend, mercurial driving talent Ken Miles (Bale), set out on a mission to humiliate Ferrari. But the course to victory never does run smooth.

    <title lang="en">Ben Wheatley Triple: Sightseers</title>
<desc>Alice Lowe and Steve Oram teamed up to write and star in this dark and violent comedy-drama, directed by Ben Wheatley (Down Terrace, Kill List). They look such an ordinary couple, but these Midlands' lovebirds prove anything but. Chris (Oram) is the proud owner of an Abbey Oxford caravan and adores few things more than exploring the glories of the British countryside. So, when presented with the opportunity to whisk his new girlfriend, Tina (Lowe), off to see such heady sights as Keswick's Pencil Museum, Crich Tramway Village and the Ribblehead Viaduct, he jumps at it. Though, to be honest, the sheltered Tina seems keener on the journey's erotic possibilities. But, almost as soon as their odyssey has begun, an awful accident completely changes the tenor of their trip. And, from then on, only the exceedingly unwise do anything to upset the increasingly malevolent pair... With Eileen Davies as Tina's oppressive mother. A Film4 production.
