    <title lang="en">Enys Men</title>
<desc>Award-winning director of Bait (2019) Mark Jenkin follows up with an eerie, expressionist poem of a film set on a remote Cornish island. Jenkin himself referred to Enys Men (which means Stone Island in Cornish) as a 'lost Cornish Folk Horror'. Like Bait, it's intrinsically Cornish, with threads of the county's past woven into its fabric. It's set in 1973 - and looks like it was filmed then too. The island is haunted by the past - including tin miners underground, a singing clergyman (John Woodvine) and some black-clad, white-aproned maids who've stepped off the label of a tin of powdered milk. Against the desolate backdrop lives and works a solitary woman (Mary Woodvine). She's studying a clump of wildflowers. She wears a red mac - like the one in 1973 horror Don't Look Now. She follows the same daily routine. Has tea. Measures soil temperature. Drops a rock down a mineshaft. Records 'no change' in her journal. But the routine is shattered when lichen appears on one of the flowers. She records the fact in her journal. But she doesn't record the fact that lichen has also started growing on her body. Is she becoming one of the island's many ghosts? Or perhaps she already is... There's a girl (Flo Crowe) who could either be the woman's daughter or her younger self. She may or may not have had a relationship with the boatman (Edward Rowe) who delivers supplies. There's also an ominous standing stone. None of it's clear. None of it's explained. And none of that really matters because this film is a deeply atmospheric curio - like a manmade, patinaed object washed up on a granite beach. Produced by Film4.

<desc>Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh star in director Rudolph Maté's medieval action-adventure set during the reign of King Henry IV. Myles Falworth (Curtis) and his sister Meg (Barbara Rush) have been raised as peasants in the countryside. But after Meg receives unwelcome attention from the Earl of Alban (David Farrar), their guardian Diccon Bowman (Rhys Williams) sends the siblings to Mackworth Castle for safety. There, Myles instantly falls in love with Lady Anne (Leigh), the daughter of the Earl of Mackworth (Herbert Marshall), the castle's owner. Obviously, there can be no possibility of romance between a noble and a peasant. However, Myles is oblivious to his true heritage, which, in due course, will afford him opportunities to both woo his sweetheart and avenge his father's murder.

Steve Thompson (Lancaster) is doing two things to get over his divorce from Anna (Yvonne De Carlo): drinking hard and moving back to LA to resume his job as an armoured car driver. But it doesn't work because he bumps into Anna again. His detective friend Pete Ramirez (Stephen McNally) warns him off. But Steve just can't help himself and starts seeing Anna while her sadistic gangster lover Slim Dundee (Dan Duryea) is out of town. And it's not long before Anna's convinced Steve to come in with Slim on a daring robbery. Will it go off without a hitch? And can everyone trust each other? Hmm, perhaps there's a clue in the title. <title lang="en">Twelve O'clock High</title>
<desc>Gregory Peck and Dean Jagger (in an Oscar-winning supporting role) star in Henry King's Second World War drama. It's 1942 and, at a US Air Force base in England, young American general Frank Savage (Peck) decides to personally take command of a bomber squadron after its colonel (Gary Merrill) sides with his men, who are demoralised by the heavy casualties they have suffered during perilous daytime missions over Germany. Though a humane man, Savage puts his natural compassion to one side in order to galvanise the unit into adopting the aggressive confidence they need to be successful and survive. But his severe treatment of the aircrews causes them to revolt, and the stresses of enforcing his tough line takes a grave toll on his own mental health... With Jagger as Major Harvey Stovall, whose reminiscences frame the narrative.

    <title lang="en">Jerry &amp; Marge Go Large</title>
<desc>Bryan Cranston and Annette Bening star in this charming comedy based on a true story, about a retired couple who find a way to exploit a lottery loophole. Jerry (Cranston) is retiring from Kellogg's after 42 years. He doesn't want to. He's good with numbers. But they're closing his line and the boss tells him to enjoy his 'golden years'. Jerry is a man who needs to fill his time. His wife Marge (Bening) is concerned about the idea of him helping around the house. She has a system. But to keep him occupied, his family have bought him a fishing boat. Does he fish? He does now. For Jerry, retirement seems to involve forcing himself to enjoy leisure activities he doesn't want to do. He's just filling time. Then one day, he overhears a conversation at the local store and realises that there's a way of drastically improving the odds of winning the lottery. And it's within the rules. He runs the numbers and gets started with a $2000 stake. It works. And because Jerry is a nice guy, he involves his whole town, so everyone can benefit. But then an evil gaggle of rich kids notice the same loophole and try to muscle in on Jerry and Marge's action. There isn't room for two sets of professional lottery players in the world, you see. But who will win the right to cheat the might of the lottery machine? Directed by David Frankel.

    <title lang="en">Venom</title>
<desc>Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams star in Ruben Fleischer's dark sci-fi anti-hero adventure from the Marvel stable (but separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in case you were wondering). A reporter finds himself inhabited by a ferocious extraterrestrial, known as a symbiote, which looks something like H. R. Giger's Alien in a gimp suit. A probe crashes to Earth. Inside the probe is an alien life form called a symbiote, which can inhabit other life forms' bodies and make those life forms do stuff. Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) is a rich bloke who believes that this is the future of human evolution. Unfortunately, humans don't seem to be able to survive the presence of a symbiote inside them. That is until Eddie Brock (Hardy), an investigative reporter, gets wind of all this from his girlfriend Anne Weying (Williams). He turns up at the lab where it's all happening and vows to expose Drake's human experiments to the world. A symbiote gets into him. And both Eddie and the symbiote survive. Cue Brock arguing with himself, accidentally poleaxing bad guys with his now extendable limbs, and sporting a fantastic-looking head that sort of grows over his own. But the battle is as much within as without. Can Eddie control the symbiote enough to make him a force for good? And if not, can he at least persuade it to kill only bad guys in really terrible ways? Endearingly, the symbiote introduces himself as Venom. Ah, cute. Good job he's got a cool name and not 'sloppy tongue' or 'drooly'... or something.

    <title lang="en">T2 Trainspotting</title>
<desc>Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Robert Carlyle and Jonny Lee Miller reprise their roles in Danny Boyle's sequel to the classic comedy-drama about the lives of young Edinburgh drug addicts. The story picks up 20 years after the events that unfolded in Trainspotting. After double-crossing his buddies, Renton (McGregor) fled to Amsterdam, where he gave up heroin and got a job and a girlfriend; Spud (Bremner) followed a similar path in Edinburgh, until his marriage to Gail (Shirley Henderson) fell apart and he returned to smack; Sick Boy's (Miller) drug of choice is now coke, and he's running a blackmail hustle with his Bulgarian girlfriend Veronika (Anjela Nedyalkova); and Begbie (Carlyle) has languished malevolently in prison for the entire period. But when Renton has a heart attack at the gym, he returns to Edinburgh hoping to put the past behind him and reconcile with his old friends. This doesn't necessarily go smoothly, particularly when Begbie breaks out of jail. And so begins another round of stories involving sex, drugs, survival, scams, friendship and revenge. With Kelly Macdonald.
