    <title lang="en">Smile</title>
<desc>Smiling makes you feel better. It releases endorphins - lifting your mood and chilling you out. Please writer and director Parker Finn, don't ruin smiling by making a self-slasher horror movie about it, starring Sosie Bacon. Oh, you have. A young girl finds her mum dead by suicide. This little girl grows up to be Dr Rose Cotter (Bacon), a psychiatrist specialising in - and not profiting much from - helping traumatised people. Physician, heal thyself! In her professional capacity, Rose meets PhD student Laura (Caitlin Stasey). Weeks earlier, Laura witnessed a college professor bludgeon himself to death with a hammer. Since that - obviously - traumatic event, Laura has sensed a presence that 'looks like people but isn't a person.' Then she unblinkingly slits her own throat with a preternaturally large grin on her face right in front of Rose. That's when Rose's hallucinations begin. But are the hallucinations a result of the trauma of this event? Or a triggering of the emotions of the little girl who found her mother dead? Or is there a malevolent presence that feeds on survivors' guilt? Her fiancé Trevor (Jessie T. Usher) fears it may be a mixture of the former, and perhaps a little bit of inherited mental illness. But her ex Joel (Kyle Gallner) - who's a cop - believes her about the latter and resolves to help her solve the mystery.

    <title lang="en">The Kid Who Would Be King</title>
<desc>Family-friendly fantasy adventure from writer-director Joe Cornish. Alex (Louis Ashbourne Serkis), a 12-year-old boy at school in suburban London, finds himself on the wrong end of a pair of older bullies when he stands up for his best pal Bedders (Dean Chaumoo). When they chase him home one night after school, Alex takes shelter in a nearby building site. There, he finds a mysterious-looking sword stuck in some stone and manages to free it from its concrete prison. Sound familiar? It should, because he and Bedders soon discover that the sword in question is indeed King Arthur's Excalibur. They have great fun playing at being knights, until a strange new kid arrives at school and reveals that he's a de-aged Merlin (Angus Imrie). The legendary wizard informs the boys that by freeing Excalibur, they've awakened sinister sorceress Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson) who, in true evil witch fashion, is dead set on enslaving everyone in Britain for her own nefarious shenanigans. It seems the future of the country is in the hands of these very unlikely noblemen. Also starring Patrick Stewart as adult Merlin.

    <title lang="en">Anne of the Thousand Days</title>
<desc>Historical drama based on the life of Anne Boleyn starring Richard Burton, Genevieve Bujold, who won a Golden Globe for the role, and Anthony Quayle. King Henry VIII (Burton) is restless in his marriage to Catherine of Aragon (Irene Papas). He is desperate for a son, but she has only provided him with a daughter, Mary. His mistress Mary Boleyn's young sister, Anne (Bujold), catches his eye and he becomes deeply infatuated with her, demanding that she become his next mistress. Anne is angrily reluctant as she is in love with another man, but their separation is orchestrated by Cardinal Wolsey (Quayle). Henry besieges Anne with declarations of his passion, but still she refuses to become his mistress, declaring that only by marriage will she give in and produce sons for him. So begins the tortuous negotiations with the Papacy around his divorce with Anne determined not to give in and Henry equally determined to wed regardless of the political and religious outcomes.

    <title lang="en">Deep Impact</title>
<desc>Elijah Wood and Morgan Freeman are among the survivors of a meteorite strike that causes the oceans to rise and tsunamis to engulf the land in this premillennial sci-fi disaster movie. Things seem pretty bleak at the start of Deep Impact. A comet the size of Mount Everest is headed for Earth. The result? An ELE, or Extinction Level Event. Reporter Jenny Lerner (Téa Leoni) makes a bit of a faux pas by calling out a politician for resigning because of an affair with a woman named Ellie, but when she learns that it was in fact due to the ELE she can at least report on that. It turns out that there is a plan to avert this catastrophe. President Beck (Freeman) is about to announce a US-Russian collaboration to land on the comet and blow it apart with nukes, meaning any impact will be lessened... although still serious enough for some dramatic scenes of destruction. The crew of the ship being sent to the comet includes un-retired and wonderfully named Spurgeon Tanner (which would also be a good name for a fish beautician), who is ideal for the job because he once landed on the moon. Also in the mix of people we might want to survive... or perhaps not... are Leo Biederman (Wood), the young amateur astronomer who discovered the comet, and Leoni's father Jason Lerner (Maximilian Schell), who she hates for leaving her mother Robin (Vanessa Redgrave) for a younger woman. A hard rain's gonna fall, but on who will it land the hardest?

    <title lang="en">Four Lions</title>
<desc>Chris Morris's Four Lions takes 'home grown' British suicide bombers beyond media stereotypes providing a portrayal that is both accurate and very funny. Omar is disillusioned about the treatment of Muslims around the world and wants to strike at the heart of the enemy. Waj will die for the cause - life's just being stuck in the queue at Alton Towers - he wants to spend eternity on Rubber Dinghy Rapids. But opposed to Omar, and almost everyone else on earth, is white convert Barry. While Omar takes Waj to training camp, Barry recruits Hassan - a student so keen to prove he's for real, he'll bomb a mosque to kick off the End Times. Faisal is co-opted to make a bomb but wants it delivered by a kamikaze crow. United in grand purpose but divided in method, Omar's crew must strike a decisive blow on their own turf but can any of them strike a match without punching himself in the face? Written by Morris with Peep Show's Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain, and starring Riz Ahmed (Shifty, Road to Guantanamo), Kayvan Novak (Fonejacker), Nigel Lindsay, Arsher Ali and Adeel Akhtar, Four Lions finds surprising light and shade in its incendiary subject.
