Writer/director Alejandro Landes's disconcerting and hallucinatory thriller is a journey into the teenage heart of darkness, set among a group of feral teenage guerrilla soldiers, named Monos, who live on a mountaintop somewhere above the clouds of Latin America. Their only accommodation is monolithic ruins that tower over them, as a reminder of the brutal adult world playing out beneath them. At the start of the film, they are visited by 'Messenger' (Wilson Salazar), who delivers to them a milking cow named Shakira and an American hostage who he calls Doctora (Julianne Nicholson). The kids are told that under no circumstances must Shakira or Doctora be harmed. Oh dear. Apart from these occasional and unscheduled visits from Messenger, whose other function is to drill and bully them, they are left completely to their own devices.
