Paul WS Anderson's sci-fi action flick continues his mission to fill his CV with films based on computer games, with as many of them as possible starring his wife Milla Jovovich. At the start of the film, we're told that other worlds exist alongside ours that are 'beyond our perception'. Then we join a pirate ship sailing upon an endless sea of sand. The ship is captained by The Admiral (Ron Perlman, sporting a wonderful bouffant reminiscent of 1980s Def Leppard). Also reminiscent of the 80s are Paul Haslinger's synth-sounds, which build to a crescendo as disaster strikes in the form of a huge monster rising out of the sand and putting an end to most of the ship's crew. For anyone who's not familiar with the game, this creature will later be identified as a 'diablos'. Cut to a world that's within the limited bounds of human perception, where an attachment of UN soldiers are driving through the desert singing a military song to pass the time. The unit is led by US Army Ranger Captain Natalie Artemis (Jovovich). Suddenly a sandstorm filled with lightning rises like a tidal wave above the soldiers. Can they outrun it? No. They're sucked into a place that looks exactly the same, but has creatures in it, like diablos and 'nerscyllas' - giant spider things. This is the monsters' world and the soldiers must fight to survive. But what of the 'hunter'?
